Test 1Test 2Test 3

Percentages are the language of money: sale signs, price rises, pay rises, business profits and the GST on every receipt. In this topic you'll revise changing between fractions, decimals and percentages, then use percentages to work backwards to the whole, to increase and decrease amounts, and to make sense of the deals, prices and charges you meet as a shopper and a worker.

What you'll learn

  • 2.01 Percentage, decimal and fraction conversion: moving between the three forms, including percentages over 100% and less than 1%, and putting them in order.
  • 2.02 Find the whole: working backwards from a part and its percentage to find the whole amount.
  • 2.03 Percentage increase and decrease: using multipliers to increase and decrease amounts, finding the percentage change, and finding the original amount.
  • Investigation: which deal is best? Comparing sale offers, stacked discounts and price rises to see which ones really save you money.
  • 2.04 Profit and loss: cost price, selling price, and profit or loss as a percentage of the cost.
  • 2.05 Consumer percentages: GST, discounts, commission, surcharges and payment plans.

Which level should I pick?

Every worksheet comes in three levels. Each one covers the same skills.

  • Level 1 · Warm-up: simpler percentages and more help along the way. A good place to start.
  • Level 2 · Core: the main worksheet for the lesson.
  • Level 3 · Challenge: harder percentages and problems with more steps, for when the Core level feels easy.

Not sure? Start with Level 2. If the first few questions feel tricky, drop to Level 1. If you finish quickly and get them right, try Level 3. Download the worksheet, print it, and write your answers in the boxes.

Practice tests

When you've finished the lessons, try the three practice tests. Each one is like the real topic test: 45 minutes, 40 marks, a section without a calculator and a section with one. Write your working under each question, then copy your final answers onto the answer sheet on the last page, just like you will in the real test.

Curriculum outcomes

What this topic covers in the Australian Curriculum (version 9).

AC9M8N05Number

use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving rational numbers and percentages, including financial contexts; formulate problems, choosing efficient calculation strategies and using digital tools where appropriate; interpret and communicate solutions in terms of the situation, reviewing the appropriateness of the model

From earlier years: these lessons revise skills students learnt in earlier years that this year's curriculum builds on, so they aren't linked to an outcome code for this year.
