Test 1Test 2Test 3

Whole numbers are the numbers you count with: 0, 1, 2, 3 and on forever. In this topic you'll sharpen the four operations, learn the rules for which part of a calculation comes first, and get good at checking whether an answer makes sense. These are the tools you'll use in every maths topic from here on.

What you'll learn

  • 1.01 Addition and subtraction: the words that mean add or subtract, quick mental strategies, and the column method.
  • 1.02 Multiplication: arrays, the area model, and multiplying big numbers in columns.
  • 1.03 Division: division as the opposite of multiplication, short division, and what to do with remainders.
  • 1.04 Order of operations: brackets first, then × and ÷, then + and −.
  • 1.05 Check reasonableness: rounding and estimating to check that an answer makes sense.
  • Investigation: how long would it take to count to a million? Big estimates, worked out step by step.
  • 1.06 Calculators: using a calculator well, and checking it with an estimate.
  • 1.07 Mathematical statements: turning words into number sentences with symbols like =, ≠, < and >.

Which level should I pick?

Every worksheet comes in three levels. Each one covers the same skills.

  • Level 1 · Warm-up: smaller numbers and more help along the way. A good place to start.
  • Level 2 · Core: the main worksheet for the lesson.
  • Level 3 · Challenge: bigger numbers and harder problems, for when the Core level feels easy.

Not sure? Start with Level 2. If the first few questions feel tricky, drop to Level 1. If you finish quickly and get them right, try Level 3. Download the worksheet, print it, and write your answers in the boxes.

Practice tests

When you've finished the lessons, try the three practice tests. Each one is like the real topic test: 45 minutes, 40 marks, a section without a calculator and a section with one. Write your working under each question, then copy your final answers onto the answer sheet on the last page, just like you will in the real test.

Curriculum outcomes

What this topic covers in the Australian Curriculum (version 9).

From earlier years: these lessons revise skills students learnt in earlier years that this year's curriculum builds on, so they aren't linked to an outcome code for this year.
