Time is a measurement you use every day: catching a bus, working a shift, cooking dinner or watching a game played on the other side of the world. In this topic you'll work out how long things take, change between 12-hour time (like 3:45 pm) and 24-hour time (like 15:45), read timetables, and use time zones, daylight saving and the International Date Line to plan calls and trips across Australia and the world.
In these worksheets, 12-hour times are written like 3:45 pm and 24-hour times like 15:45, the way they appear on phones, timetables and airline tickets.
What you'll learn
- 4.01 Elapsed time: changing between units of time, adding and subtracting times, and working out how long something takes, including time sheets and calendars.
- 4.02 12 and 24 hour time: changing between 12-hour and 24-hour time, reading timetables, and working with times that go past midnight.
- 4.03 Time zones and the date line: Australia's time zones and daylight saving, UTC offsets around the world, and what happens to the date when you cross the International Date Line.
- Investigation: plan with time zones. Find a time when a family spread across the world can all join a video call, and plan a long trip from Australia to London.
Which level should I pick?
Every worksheet comes in three levels. Each one covers the same skills.
- Level 1 · Warm-up: smaller numbers and more help along the way. A good place to start.
- Level 2 · Core: the main worksheet for the lesson.
- Level 3 · Challenge: times that cross midnight and several days, trips with more legs, and harder reasoning, for when the Core level feels easy.
Not sure? Start with Level 2. If the first few questions feel tricky, drop to Level 1. If you finish quickly and get them right, try Level 3. Download the worksheet, print it, and write your answers in the boxes.
Practice tests
When you've finished the lessons, try the three practice tests. Each one is like the real topic test: 45 minutes, 40 marks, a section without a calculator and a section with one. Write your working under each question, then copy your final answers onto the answer sheet on the last page, just like you will in the real test.
Curriculum outcomes

solve problems involving duration, including using 12- and 24-hour time across multiple time zones
From earlier years: these lessons revise skills students learnt in earlier years that this year's curriculum builds on, so they aren't linked to an outcome code for this year.
